IMS Twister: The Ultimate Dust Extraction System for CN Machining
Dust buildup is a major challenge in CNC machining, especially when working with wood, MDF, laminated materials and composite panels. IMS Twister helps remove dust and production debris directly at the cutting point, supporting cleaner machining, greater efficiency and improved working conditions.
Why Dust Control Matters in CNC Machining
Excessive dust and chips can:
- Reduce machining precision and affect cut quality.
- Accumulate inside the machine and increase maintenance requirements.
- Contaminate electronic and pneumatic components.
- Increase operators’ exposure to airborne particles.
- Extend cleaning time between production cycles.
IMS Twister is an integrated Dust Extraction System designed to collect production debris while machining is taking place. Positioned directly around the cutting tool, it removes chips and dust close to their source.
How IMS Twister Works
Unlike extraction solutions that operate only from the machine enclosure, IMS Twister is installed directly on the CNC tool holder. Its geometry generates an airflow around the cutting tool and directs chips and dust towards the machine’s extraction system.
- Creates a vacuum effect around the cutting area.
- Removes chips and dust directly at the source.
- Helps prevent debris from accumulating around the tool.
- Supports cleaner and more precise machining.
- Reduces the time required for manual cleaning.

Cleaner CNC Working Area
Dust and chips are collected during the machining cycle, helping keep the worktable, machine enclosure and surrounding area cleaner.
Improved Operator Environment
Capturing debris close to the cutting point helps reduce the amount of airborne dust dispersed inside the machine and production area.
Reduced Machine Maintenance
Lower dust accumulation can help protect sensitive electronic, mechanical and pneumatic components from contamination.
High-Speed CNC Performance
IMS Twister is designed for demanding CNC operations and supports high-speed machining applications up to 25,000 RPM, subject to the selected model and operating conditions.
Cleaner Cutting Results
Removing debris from the cutting area helps reduce recutting and material buildup around the router bit.
Lower Cleaning Time
Less residual debris on the worktable means operators can spend more time machining and less time cleaning between production cycles.
Available IMS Twister Versions
The IMS Twister range includes different technologies designed to meet specific CNC machining requirements.
| Version | Recommended Application | Main Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| IMS Twister Standard | General CNC routing and dust extraction | Compatible with precision ER collets and suitable for a wide range of machining operations. |
| IMS Twister Hydro | High-speed nesting and precision machining | Hydraulic clamping technology designed to support high concentricity, stable tool holding and reduced vibration. |
| IMS Twister Heat | High-speed and ultra-precision applications | Heat-shrink technology for maximum tool stability, low vibration and highly accurate machining, including operations above 24,000 RPM. |
Sizes and Machining Applications
IMS Twister is available in different dimensions to suit the cutting tool and machining operation.
- 97.5 mm diameter: suitable for cutting tools up to approximately 70 mm.
- 80 mm diameter: suitable for cutting tools up to approximately 60 mm.
- Designed for nesting, routing and pantograph operations.
- Available for multiple CNC spindle interfaces and tool-holder configurations.
Final compatibility must always be checked according to the spindle interface, tool-holder type, cutting-tool diameter, operating speed and machine extraction system.
How to Install and Use IMS Twister
- Clean the components. Make sure the IMS Twister, collet, tool holder and cutting tool are free from dust and debris.
- Install the cutting tool correctly. Insert the router bit into the collet while exposing only the cutting section required for the operation. Do not over-insert the tool.
- Secure the IMS Twister. Install the system on the tool holder and lock it correctly using the appropriate tightening fixture, wrench or IMS Twister Drive Key Locking System.
- Set the working distance. Maintain a gap of approximately 2–10 mm between IMS Twister and the workpiece.
- Run a test cycle. Check clearance, rotation, extraction performance and machine parameters before starting production.
Correct Working Distance
For effective dust extraction, Machtechsolution recommends maintaining a gap of 2–10 mm between IMS Twister and the work surface. A presetting device can help operators define this distance accurately.
If the system shows signs of overheating, increase the distance between IMS Twister and the workpiece. The unit may be positioned too close to the cutting surface.
Maintenance Recommendations
Regular cleaning and correct assembly are essential for maintaining extraction performance, precision and tool life.
- Clean the IMS Twister before and after every use.
- Remove dust from the nut, collet and tool-holder surfaces.
- Inspect the router bit for wear, damage or material buildup.
- Use precision ER collets where required by the selected version.
- Use the correct tightening fixture and wrench.
- Follow the tool holder’s specified tightening torque.
- Confirm that the tool and tool holder rotate in the correct direction.
IMS Twister can also operate with noise levels up to 40% lower than some conventional dust-extraction nuts. Where the machining operation allows it, reducing RPM and feed rate can further decrease noise.
